Richard Yeilding and Milly Mills
Richard J. YEILDING b. 26 Apr 1768, NC, Bible Record married (1st) 5 Nov 1788, in Rutherford Co., NC,
Milly MILLS -b. 1768, Rutherford Co., NC, (daughter of William Henry MILLS and Rebecca MILLS d.1811, Rutherford Co., NC, m. wife(2) Nancy RUSSELL b. 1778, SC, d. 3 Oct 1858,Blount/Cullman Co., AL.
Richard died 27 Feb 1864, AL (prob Blount Co., ). Richard and his children were entered in his bible with their last name spelled YEILDING.
Some of his descendants reversed the E and I for reasons unknown. I have found Richards last name spelled four different ways on documents. Bible entry - Richard Yeilding born April the 26th one thousand seventeen hundred & sixty eight or 1768.
From 1795 to 1810, Richard was at Walnut Creek and Green river, Rutherford Co., NC.
He served in the Revolutionary War from 1778-1781, in the 3rd VA Dragoons, Col. William Washington's Cavalry. A military plaque was supposed to have been placed in his honor in Blount Co., Alabama. In the dedication speech for the placement of this plaque it states the plaque had not been received by the dedication date. This plaque has yet to be found in a Blount Co. cemetery. It is doubtful it was ever placed.
In 1819, on May 20, Richard purchased land in Lawrence Co, Alabama Territory, Sec. 23, Twp. 6, Rng. 9W. Then on July 6, Richard and his son Francis purchased land in Blount Co., Alabama Territory, Sec. 27, Twp. 10, Rng. 1E. In 1820,
Richard was appointed with others to supervise the errection of public buildings in the Blount County Seat of Blountsville. In 1832, on Aug. 3, Richard purchased land in Blount Co., Sec. 27, Twp. 11, Rng. 1W. In 1836, on Aug 18, Richard purchased land in Marshall Co., Sec. 29, Twp. 10, Rng. 3W.
In the 1840's he and Nancy were members of the Siloam Baptist Church in Royal, 6 miles east of Blountsville. The church is now the Church of God of Prophecy, Royal, Alabama.
In the 1850 census, Richard and Nancy were living with his daughter, Mary Y. Mortin and her husband in Marshall Co.
In the 1860 census, Richard was listed with his son Francis Yeilding. Sgt. John Richard Yielding, 3rd Virginia Dragoons, Revolutionary War .Through some sad irony of fate, men who have performed valiantly and at times heroically on the field of battle, and endured untold hardships, their deeds not only remain unrecorded but in the end their bodies are returned to dust in an unmarked grave. Later generations who pass that way discover the faint path which they trod and indelible proof of their valor and patriotism, then in humble gratitude raise a monument to their memory. In this spirit we assemble today to render homage to heroes of other days. Man who had the will and courage to face insuperable odds and through sheer tenacity and determination were able to bring the war to a triumphant conclusion and found a government which stands forth supreme today. Sgt. Yielding lived in North Carolina but in 1778 volunteered and served three years in the Virginia Dragoons under Colonel William Washington. After France had recognized the American Colonies and started providing military and financial aid, the British directed their attention to the South, hoping that Loyalists along the coastal towns would rally to their colors. This did, indeed occur but back among the hills and Appalachian mountains there were farmers, hunters, trappers, woodsmen and experienced Indian fighters who rallied to this country's defense. They promptly exterminated the British at Kings Mountain, Cowpens and then beat a withering retreat across North Carolina to the Den River in Virginia, where they were resupplied, then counter marched into North Carolina where they met General Cornwallis head-on at Guildfords Courthouse. Historians generally refer to this battle as a draw, but it did prove to the Americans that they were vastly superior marksmen. In a part of Col. William Washington's Cavalry, Sgt. Yielding was there through the Carolina and Virginia campaign and was present when Cornwallis surrendered to Gen. Washington. His marker has not been received, but his military record has been authenticated beyond the peradventure of a doubt. So, today with bowed heads we dedicate this marker in his memory.
Sgt. John Joseph Mead, 3rd Virginia Dragoon, Revolutionary War
Sgt. Mead and Sgt. Yielding were brothers-in-law and served in the same Company, probably under Captain James Madison who later became President of the United States. So, it was not by accident that they later acquired property and becalmed outstanding citizens of Blount County, Alabama. At Cowpens it was their battalion under Col. William Washington that rolled up the flank of Col. Banister Tarleton's right flank and closed the avenue of retreat of the British Infantry and forced Tarleton to fly for his own life, leaving behind 960 men either killed, wounded or taken prisoner out of 1100. Whereas the Americans lost nine killed and fifty-six wounded or missing in action out of about 1100 men. It was Tarleton who had butchered the Americans at the Battle of Camden, South Carolina a few months before. Now he was paying bitterly for his lack of compassion and Sgt. Mead and Sgt. Yielding, with their cohorts were exacting reprisal. We, of course, do not contend that the mountaineer patriots won the Revolutionary War, but we certainly hold that their fortitude, valor and marksmanship were deciding factors in turning the tide of victory our way. So with a heart overflowing with gratitude we thank God for such men and pray that we, too, may prove worthy of the trust left to us. In that spirit we dedicate this marker to Sgt. John Joseph Mead
